The great white whale is coming to Eathorpe!

First commissioned by Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Richard Derrington has adapted Herman Melville’s ‘Great American Novel’ as a 2-hander. Last seen in Eathorpe as a Victorian poacher in his one-man show, ‘Taylor’s Tickler’, Richard has recently been receiving rave reviews for his performance in Warwick as Scrooge in ‘A Christmas Carol’. (You might also have seen him last summer in the lead role of Willy Loman in ‘Death of a Salesman’).

He is now presenting this show which explores the monumental themes of obsession and revenge. It manages to be both funny and moving. Ahab, Queequeg, Daggoo, Tashtego, Stubb, Starbuck, Flask – they all appear, and a few more besides – all performed by just two actors.

A special ingredient of the show is the other actor. Richard is performing for the first time EVER with his 19 year old son, Ned, who has been working with the National Youth Theatre. So who plays the part of the whale? You’ll have to get a ticket to find out!

Tickets: £7, £6 (o-65s, u-18s) if booked before 31st January

£9, £8 (o-65s, u-18s) if booked after

To book: Ring Sue on 01926 632575 or Pauline on 632242.

For anyone unfamiliar with the band, they perform swing, jive, 50s rock and roll – fronted by the huge voice and personality of Stephen (the Doctor) himself. This is not ‘background music’. This is ‘put on your dancing shoes’ time. This is ‘let the dogs out’ time. This is the 6-piece band, with vocals, sax, keys, bass drums and trumpet.

A small, brave boy named Antonio is kidnapped by brigands and carried off to their secret cave in the Italian mountains. Bored, the chief demands that Antonio tells a story; so he weaves an incredible tale of bears on beaches and bats in castles and the Thingy that lives in the moat, which enthrals his captors. But can he be clever enough to trick them and make his escape?

… a charming, witty, yarn-within-a-yarn that will captivate children as much on bright, sunny days, as on dark and, stormy nights.

’Danya and Louise weave this enthralling and interactive tale. My son and I were enchanted by the performance’ Melanie Dakin – Watford Observer

Both storytellers are local. Danya lives in Hunningham, whilst Louise was raised in Alveston, near Stratford. She went to The Croft School and later The Kingsley School in Leamington Spa

Saturday, 14th March

at 8.00 p.m. (doors/bar open 7.30 p.m.)

Absurd, hyperactive comedy where the props have a life of their own. These are the two who, last time they were in Eathorpe, re-created Shirley Bassey’s Stairway to Heaven in a fantasy about a washing machine repair man.

There is a sort of plot: Stacey, an inept Geography teacher, goes to the exotic Isle of Sambuca to build a new life. But she is pursued by a Health and Safety officer from Hampshire County Council.

The pair get caught up in a jungle adventure involving cannibals, snakes, ex-pats and a multi-purpose palm tree. If you want to know more, you’ll have to come and see the show.

A 5-star review of this show at the Edinburgh Festival suggested you should “Kill to get a ticket” (One4Review.com). “We’ve seen it and we agree.” (Sue Burt and David French)

Tickets: £6, £5 (over-65s or students) if booked and paid for before 8th March, or

£8, £7 (over-65s or students) if booked later.

His four piece band are all exceptional musicians in their own right and the talents they bring to the performance raise the quality level right through the roof.

Daniel Smith is one of the most exciting young talents to emerge on the British blues scene and has a string of nominations as Best UK Blues Keyboardist. He has a laid-back, dry humour and some great tales of life on the road.

This isn’t just a night for die-hard boogie-woogie fans. It’s a real barnstorming performance from Daniel and his three musicians (keyboard, guitar, harmonica, bass, drums and vocals), with music that ranges from home-town Chicago blues to jazz-blues, jaw-dropping standards, countless fantastic solos and a stunning Brazilian drum piece.

We’ve decided to incorporate Sunday Supper into the evening, so you can start with a selection of hot savoury pies, accompanying salads and crusty rolls, followed by a piece of cake if you can find room. The bar will also be open from 7.00 p.m.

Tickets:

Straight from the Edinburgh Festival to Eathorpe! It tells the story of the fascinating rise and fall of Robert Maxwell, the notorious newspaper tycoon who disappeared from his luxury yacht in 1991.
It is told from Maxwell’s point of view, and Philip York’s impersonation of Maxwell is apparently uncannily accurate.
